Savvy Navvy is excellent for passage planning and cruising. Tackr is focused entirely on racing — start line tactics, layline strategy, polar optimisation. The two do different jobs and can sit side by side on the same boat.

Yacht racing software — common questions.

Does Tackr work without the Tackr Hub hardware?

Yes. The Tackr app includes a full simulation mode — sailing upwind in Cork Harbour with realistic tacking, wind, and tide — so you can explore all features without any hardware. When the Tackr Hub is connected, all simulated data is replaced by your real instrument data automatically.

Which boat classes does Tackr support?

Tackr works with any keelboat. It includes general polar presets (Club Racer, Performance Keelboat and Short-handed), and you can enter your own boat’s polar table in the built-in polar editor. The polar data drives beat angle, run angle and VMG target calculations.

Does Tackr use my phone's GPS or the boat's GPS?

Either. Without the Tackr Hub, the app uses your phone’s GPS. With the Hub connected, it uses the Hub’s built-in GPS alongside your boat’s instrument data. Phone GPS gives position and speed, but not wind, depth or speed through water.

Can I use Tackr while racing offshore?

Yes. Tackr is a PWA that works fully offline once installed. The racing app, chart tiles (cached), and all calculations run without internet. The Tackr Hub's WiFi hotspot is self-contained — no shore-side connectivity needed.

Is Tackr free?

The Tackr app demo is free to try in your browser, and the app is free during the beta. Pricing for the app and the Tackr Hub hasn’t been announced yet. Join the waitlist to hear first.
